How to set yourself free of various Mental Health Struggles and Conditions
As a survivor of a mental health condition, I have learned the need to develop a proprietary attitude toward an illness. Many times, persons of different mental health issues tend to run away from their problems in a bid to stay stigma-free in society. This has constantly led to more ramifications for individuals as they fear owning the afflictions that ensue with their illnesses. In this article, I am explaining to fellow survivors how I took authority on my condition with Bipolar Disorder to stay on track with my daily life, particularly for peer-supporting others.
The process entails self-acceptance procedures that set one
free of any fears that result from the stigmatization of mental health survivors.
For my condition, Bipolar Disorder, the aftermath of a manic or depressive
episode is full of awful stories that may be hard to take in. This explains why
it is more difficult to deal with the condition. Besides, the fact that neither of the episodes
fades in the survivor's memory tends to weigh more when it comes to owning the
afflictions. However, this is the most effective step that has worked for me in
managing the condition. With all the odd stories that had transpired, I
realized the eminence of living with reality and taking it all upon myself,
which forms a significant part of my healing process.
First, it began by actively engaging the closest
support system that was in the whole period of the first manic episode. The
main reason for this was to get the exact stories and compare them to my version of
the experiences, just to ascertain my side of the story. This forms a very
delicate process as some may exaggerate their versions while others may hold
back due to fear of causing more trouble for the survivors. Therefore, it cannot
follow immediately since the right support system for assessment takes some
time to be identified. One key trait for assessing the right people is by
ascertaining their understanding of mental health as a phenomenon. Their
understanding does not necessarily need to be distinct, but at least, should
possess key know-how of the phenomenon.
Once with the right version of the ordeals, it is easy to beat
the stigma since a survivor becomes aware of all the stories that may be going
around. In regard, one develops the right emotional approach to any nay-say
within their environment, hence making them adaptive to the emerging situations
that follow after an episode. With a hint of what people hold about themselves,
it is easy to predict how society views you as a mental health survivor. One
factor that should surely keep you moving is the fact that a smaller percentage
of contemporary society understands the concept of mental health and so every
utterance they make is mostly out of ignorance. This thought weakens the
stigmatization that they create on various victims as they only appear as
ignorant individuals, hence pitied rather than quarreled.
Taking responsibility for all the pre and post-actions of an
episode also entails being open to corrections and adopting the new normal as
directed by those who dearly care. For instance, the manic or depressive
episodes in Bipolar Disorder come with various reactions that may damage one’s
life if not approached rightly. Once a survivor of a mental health condition, one
should not adopt the lifestyles like those within top positions in tyrannical settings in which leaders break laws and legislate the breach to be
the new rules. Mental health survivors must be open to correcting their mistakes
as pointed out by their support system and revert to the accepted codes of
conduct within their settings. This creates a virtual corrective system that
keeps them on track even after adverse conditions that may result from
different illnesses.
Owning the mess creates the need to maintain a personal conscience
and a higher sense of responsibility. Besides, it creates a habit of routinely
seeking approval before acting to boost their level of individual
responsibility and personal care. By having first-hand experience of their
episodes, the victims should stay alert and on check of their actions to avoid
a replica of past ordeals for an effective recovery process. This substantiates
the reason why staying free from drugs is an absolute necessity in gaining
effective healing and recovery process. As usual, drugs change people’s morals
unconsciously while mental health victims should strive to constantly stay
conscious and responsible to avoid unprecedented triggers of their conditions
while owning the mess entails avoiding all possible pitfalls.
On balance, observing effective recovery and healing process
starts from owning the afflictions which are marked by having a proprietary
mental upset on the survivor. Through this, the emotional intelligence of the survivor automatically develops to take responsibility for all the surrounding
occurrences resulting from a mental health crisis. Just like the intel
(electric intelligence) in computers; the body responds to commands from the
brain, hence willingly accepting the miseries from a mental health crisis sends a signal to the brain to give the right restorative approaches for different
mental illnesses. Therefore, owning the mess is the most appropriate way to set
one free of any particular mental health crisis from reoccurrence. One thing;
